I’ve been sewing for 55 years. I started out garment sewing.  One day my mother saw some of my brother’s geometry designs and said I should make a quilt using them.  And that was the beginning of my joy in creating quilts.  My favorite quilt pattern is the one that I’m getting ready to do next.

This was my first day of kindergarten.  I learned to do embroidery just three years later when I was eight.  I learned to sew garments in seventh grade home-economics.  I made my first quilt when I was twenty-three.  My husband and I moved to a new town with a new baby to a new apartment so my husband could begin graduate school and I could begin a new job.  That's a lot of new. In an attempt to ward off insanity I armed myself with a pattern, headed to the fabric store and made my purchase.  That was 1993.

I started quilting 14 years ago.  My niece was born and my brother expected the crocheted afghans that I made for my other nieces and nephews.  I said, “No way” that I was tired of it, but that didn’t fly with my brother.  I had always wanted to learn to quilt, so that is what I decided to make for my niece.  I went to the library and the librarian gave me a book of quilt designs that I could tackle.  I borrowed a sewing machine and made the “Around the World” design.  A few phone calls to the librarian and I finished the quilt.  I have been going ever since that moment. My favorite quilt is the one that I’ve just finished.

About three to four years ago I purchased a longarm, because my daughter needed some type of income.  Now I’m working myself to death, but longarming gives me a break from all the testosterone in the house.

As a young girl, I remember helping my great grandmother pick out scraps for some of the quilts that she made.  Since that time, I had always wanted to make a quilt.  My grandmother passed away when I was only 13 and I didn't know anyone else that could teach me how to quilt.  I took a continuing education course offered at MSSU, but the piecing was all done by hand and after 6 weeks I only had about a 3 foot square wall hanging.  During that class, I heard about Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Series and have been hooked ever since.  I have taught serveral classes since then and continue to take classes and learn new techniques.  The thing I enjoy most about classes is seeing all the diffrent variations of quilts from the same class.  And it is always fun meeting fellow quilters and sharing new and old ideas.

I started quilting when I was pregnant with my first son, 18 years ago.  My grandmother and great aunt had always quilted.  I love carrying on traditions and have always been crafty, so I quickly took to the art.  I have given away many quilts, but I still keep the first quilt that I ever made.  Every now and then I pull it out and say, "You've come a long way, baby!" You may have seen me during Shop Hops and during other classes.  Starting in 2010 I will begin teaching at Bittersweet. Hope to see you in one of my classes.
